Laura BENEDETTI

Administrative & Human Resources Manager

Cheval Blanc
Class of 2015

Paris, France Return

“As I was born in Nimes, I quite naturally looked into Vatel, as I knew about its great reputation.

The learning cycle, with one week in theoretical courses and the next one in practical application at the Vatel Hotel, really attracted me.

I did two very complementary internships:

- the first at the front desk of a 50-room Best Western Hotel in Corsica,

- and the second in the Restaurant of a 394-room hotel, the Royal Garden Hotel in London, England.

The structure, management, client base, employees... Both were completely different! That allowed me to gain more experience and it was a fantastic learning experience.

It seemed obvious to me that I had to continue with the MBA in International Hotel Managementl after my Bachelor to be able to work in the type of managerial jobs I was looking for. As I wanted to do my internship in Paris, I decided to go there directly.

During the two years I spent at Vatel Paris, I learned so much and honed my career choices: my professors, who were all professionals still in the workplace, also gave me the advantage of their real life experiences.

Little by little I became aware of all the possibilities in the Parisian hospitality market, up until knowing exactly in what hotel category and department I wanted to do my final internship in.

So I finished my Vatel curriculum with an eight-month internship in the Human Resources department of the Parisian palace, Le Bristol.

This department won me over and I started sending out my resume to the HR departments of other luxury hotels in the capital and I was hired as the Human Resources Coordinator in the Plaza Athenee!

Her job

The HR department provides a collective fresh momentum where notions of recognition, motivation and abnegation contribute to better productivity.

As a member of the Human Resources team in the Parisian palace, the Plaza Athenee, I have several missions in line with the four different HR poles:

  1. Administration:
  • Drawing up documents relating to the life of employee in our company
  • Welcoming, monitoring and advising our employees
  • Managing temporary employees
  1. Training:
  • Managing current and future training files
  • Welcoming participants and responding to any questions about the training course
  • Managing internal training courses (induction days, service quality training)
  1. Internal communication:
  • Assessing and monitoring communication tools for hotel employees
  1. Discipline:
  • Managing and writing diverse disciplinary letters.

Qualities required:

  • General organization
  • Listening ability
  • Patience
  • Thoroughness

What I really like the best in this job are the relationships I have with the other employees. Each one has a different experience and skills. On a daily basis, part of my work consists in helping them be fulfilled in their jobs, allowing them to voice their concerns and above all, to feel that someone is listening to them.

A hotel’s family spirit and the fact that Management is always there for them, and will allow them to participate also contribute to employee satisfaction. With 154 rooms and 54 suites, the Plaza Athenee is THE Parisian Tailor-Made Palace, where 570 employees all have the same goal: making sure that our guests have an exceptional stay.

The Human Resources Department, with eight members, is in charge of welcoming new employees and showing them around as well as developing the qualities and skill sets of the workforce.

I’d like to continue my professional career in the administrative field to gain knowledge little by little and be an HR Manager, with a long-term goal of managing a hotel.

I really want to show people that working in the Human Resources department is a valid way of pursuing a career in the hospitality industry and acquiring the skills necessary to manage a hotel, whatever its dimension."
